Guide to Configuring the APN for SmartTrackerKids 20T
The SmartTrackerKids 20T is a smart watch designed for children aged 2 to 11 years. One of its primary functions is GPS tracking.
Like all smartwatches, it requires a SIM card to function properly and to be paired with the parent's smartphone via an app.
One of the initial setup steps is configuring the APN (Access Point Name) with the parameters provided by the SIM card provider.
Without proper APN configuration, the device's tracking and communication functions cannot work. It is also important to remember that satellite tracking depends on a working internet connection.
In this guide, I will explain how to configure the APN on your SmartTrackerKids 20T to ensure that internet and other advanced features are properly activated and functioning.
Check That the SIM Card Is Valid
Make sure that the SIM card inserted into the SmartTrackerKids 20T is valid, active, and does not require a PIN. Once the SIM card is inserted into the device, calls and SMS will work without issues, but data connectivity (internet) may not be active until the APN is properly configured.
Why APN Configuration Is Necessary
The APN is a set of parameters provided by the SIM provider that allows the device to connect to the internet using the mobile network. Without this configuration, you will not be able to use the internet on the device, preventing features like app control and real-time location updates.
How to Configure the APN on SmartTrackerKids 20T
To configure the APN via SMS on the SmartTrackerKids 20T, follow these steps:
-
Before manually configuring the APN, you can send a test SMS to check if the current settings are correct. Send the following SMS command to the number of the SIM inserted in the watch:
pw,123456,ts #
- After sending this SMS, you should receive a response containing the following information:
- wifiOpen:
- wifiConnect:
- gprsOpen:
- NET: OK (100)
If the response contains "NET: OK", the APN is correctly configured, and no further action is needed.
If the response does not include "NET: OK", you will need to manually configure the APN.
Manual APN Configuration
If the check indicates that the APN needs to be manually configured, you must obtain the APN details from your SIM provider, including the APN name, MCC (Mobile Country Code), and MNC (Mobile Network Code). If required, you may also need the username and password. Most operators do not require a username and password, so these fields can usually be left empty.
Prepare the APN configuration SMS as follows:
- APN Name | Example: "telstra.internet" or "tmobil.cl"
- Username | Usually empty for most operators
- Password | Also usually empty
- MCC | Example: 505 for Australia
- MNC | Example: 01 for a specific operator
- SMS Command | Once you have these details, send an SMS to the SIM number inside the device using the following format:
pw,123456,apn,,,,#
Practical Examples
- For an operator with APN "telstra.internet", no username or password, MCC 505, and MNC 01 (e.g., Australia):
pw,123456,apn,telstra.internet,,,50501#
- For an operator with APN "tmobil.cl", username "wap", password "wap", MCC 730, and MNC 02 (e.g., Chile):
pw,123456,apn,tmobil.cl,wap,wap,73002#
- Send and Confirm | Once the SMS command is sent, you should receive a confirmation message that the APN has been successfully set, such as:
APN setup... successful
- Restart the Device | After receiving the confirmation, restart the watch to apply the new APN settings and ensure that the data connection works correctly.
Saving the Settings
Once the parameters are entered, save the settings. The device is now configured to use the internet via the mobile network. If the APN has not been configured, you may notice that the SmartTrackerKids app control does not work.
Testing Data Connection
After saving the settings, test whether the data connection is active:
- Try using a feature that requires internet, such as real-time tracking of the device, or check if you receive location updates via the SmartTrackerKids app.
App Control
Once the APN is correctly configured, app control (such as outdoor location tracking) will work without issues. Remember that app control will not function properly until the APN is set up, even if the device can make calls and send SMS.
Once the watch has been set up, it must be connected to the App. You can scan the QR code on the watch directly from the Devices section of the App. The QR code is present in the watch menus.
